COL Nelson L. Michael, MD, PhD, USA, 2013 Army Hero Of Military Medicine
COL Michael exemplifies excellence in public service. His leadership in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and infectious disease research has impacted both the military and global communities. His career has focused on developing an effective HIV vaccine to protect U.S. and Allied Armed Services, and to reduce the global impact of the disease. He has been a researcher with the US Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research for 23 years, and has been its director since 2006. Under COL Michael’s leadership, MHRP has grown in scope and diversity, and has forged extensive collaborations with US agencies and foreign governments, private industry, academia, and non government organizations.
